Profile
Sang Lee Farms is a third-generation, family-owned certified organic farm located in Peconic, New York. Established in the 1940s by George Kim Lee and his brothers, the farm originally supplied Asian vegetables to New York City’s Chinatown. Over the decades, it expanded its reach along the East Coast, adapting to market changes and evolving consumer preferences.
In 1987, Fred Lee, George’s son, relocated the farm to its current location on the North Fork of Long Island. Recognizing the growing demand for organic produce and driven by personal convictions about health and sustainability, the Lees transitioned the farm to certified organic practices in 2007. This commitment was acknowledged in 2019 when Fred and Karen Lee were honored as the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York’s Farmers of the Year.
Today, Sang Lee Farms cultivates over 100 varieties of specialty vegetables, including heirloom tomatoes, baby greens, and traditional Asian crops like Chinese cabbages and radishes. The farm emphasizes regenerative agriculture, employing cover cropping, water conservation, and minimal tillage to enhance soil health and biodiversity. These practices earned them the 2020 New York Leopold Conservation Award, recognizing their leadership in sustainable farming.
Beyond fresh produce, the farm offers a range of value-added products through their Loca*Lee® line, featuring items like pestos, pickled vegetables, soups, and sauces, all prepared in their on-site certified organic kitchen. They also operate a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, providing members with weekly shares of seasonal produce, and participate in local farmers markets across Long Island and Brooklyn.
Sang Lee Farms’ farm stand and garden center are open seasonally, offering not only their organic produce but also starter plants, gardening supplies, and educational workshops. The farm remains a testament to the Lee family’s dedication to sustainable agriculture, community engagement, and the preservation of farming traditions on Long Island.
