Profile
Bedell Cellars is a pioneering, family-owned winery located in Cutchogue, New York, on the North Fork of Long Island. Established in 1980 by Kip and Susan Bedell, the winery has played a significant role in shaping the region’s wine industry. Kip Bedell, affectionately known as “Mr. Merlot” by Wine Spectator, helped put Long Island wines on the map with his dedication to quality and innovation.
In 2000, Bedell Cellars was acquired by Michael Lynne, a film executive and art collector, who infused the winery with a blend of artistic vision and commitment to excellence. Under his ownership, Bedell Cellars continued to flourish, gaining national recognition. Notably, their 2009 Merlot was served at President Barack Obama’s 2013 Inaugural Luncheon, marking the first time a New York State wine was featured at such an event.
Bedell Cellars is renowned for its sustainable farming practices and handcrafted wines that reflect the unique maritime terroir of the North Fork. The winery produces a diverse portfolio, including red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines. Their flagship wine, Musée, is a powerful red blend that showcases the depth and complexity achievable in the region. Other notable offerings include their Viognier, Albariño, and Sauvignon Blanc, each expressing distinct characteristics of the local terroir.
The winery’s tasting room, originally a 1919 potato barn, has been transformed into an elegant space featuring contemporary art from renowned artists like Chuck Close and Mickalene Thomas. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, cellar tours, and events in a setting that blends rustic charm with modern sophistication.
Bedell Cellars also serves as a picturesque venue for weddings and private events, accommodating up to 200 guests. The estate offers various settings, including a mahogany pavilion, apple orchard, and lavender field, providing a romantic backdrop for special occasions.
