Profile
Nestled along the scenic Main Road in Cutchogue, Long Island, Wickham’s Fruit Farm stands as one of the oldest continuously cultivated farms in the United States. With roots tracing back to 1661, this historic, family-run farm spans approximately 300 acres, with 200 acres dedicated to fruit cultivation. The Wickham family has stewarded this land for over 12 generations, making it a cornerstone of North Fork agriculture and community life.
The Wickham family’s association with this land began in the late 1600s when Joseph Wickham purchased hundreds of acres in Cutchogue. Over the centuries, the farm has witnessed significant events, including the tragic 1854 Wickham murders, which, due to the sequence of inheritance, ensured the farm remained within the Wickham lineage. Today, the farm is managed by Jonathan Wickham, who continues the family’s commitment to agriculture and community engagement.
Wickham’s Fruit Farm offers a diverse array of fruits and vegetables throughout the growing season, including strawberries, cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums, apples, pears, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, sweet corn, tomatoes, cantaloupes, and pumpkins. The farm stand, one of the earliest in the region, established in the 1940s, provides fresh produce, homemade pies, scones, and apple cider donuts, all made on-site.
Visitors can engage in pick-your-own activities, particularly apple picking, which is available from now until mid-October. These experiences offer families and individuals a hands-on connection to the land and its produce.
Wickham’s Fruit Farm is not just a place to purchase fresh produce; it’s a hub for community interaction and education. The farm hosts group tours and educational programs, emphasizing the importance of local agriculture and sustainable farming practices. Manager Laurie McBride highlights the farm’s role in educating consumers about seasonal produce and the realities of farming on Long Island.
A significant portion of Wickham’s land is enrolled in Suffolk County’s Farmland Preservation program, ensuring that it remains dedicated to agriculture for generations to come. The farm collaborates with institutions like Cornell Cooperative Extension to implement conservation initiatives and explore new agricultural techniques.
Whether you’re seeking fresh, locally-grown produce, a family-friendly outing, or a glimpse into Long Island’s rich agricultural history, Wickham’s Fruit Farm offers an authentic and enriching experience.
